In August 2020,  Maame Owusu started graduate studies at Agnes Scott College, to pursue a master of science degree in data analysis and communication. As a working mother of three children under the age of seven during a pandemic, Owusu was not shying away from any challenges.

“I have always been one to challenge myself,” says Owusu, who was born and raised in Accra, Ghana, and moved to the United States with her husband in 2013. “There are still a lot of things I want to do.”

Owusu began her career in the insurance industry, and continued working remotely as an analyst for a company in Ghana after she came to the United States. Because the insurance industry is heavily data driven, the idea of collecting data and presenting it in an interesting way “fascinated” her. She wanted to learn more.

“I pursued a master’s degree in data analysis because I was interested in data and artificial intelligence and I wanted to learn how to take it further and present it in a meaningful way.”

“I pursued a master’s degree in data analysis because I was interested in data and artificial intelligence and I wanted to learn how to take it further and present it in a meaningful way,” she says. “Also, achieving anything that will propel me to a higher level has always been my goal.”

Agnes Scott’s master of science degree in data analysis and communication teaches students how to effectively analyze and communicate data. By pairing data analysis with effective communication, students learn compellingly data driven insights to a range of audiences.

When she could, Owusu tailored her class projects around her insurance job, specifically analyzing customer data and predicting trends within the industry.

“I drew up a study on how artificial intelligence has powered technology to track customer driving trends so we could develop policies that meet customers’ individual needs,” she says. “The beauty of Agnes Scott’s graduate classes is that they enhance what you already know and allow you to go to the next level.”

Owusu graduated in December 2021, and already has a new job that allows her to showcase the skills she cultivated during her graduate studies. Since October, she has been working as a security governance, risk and compliance analyst at AssetMark, a company that provides asset management and financial advisory services. She attributes her professional success to the classes she took at Agnes Scott.
